Basic DIY Garden Design Principles

Gardening is not done at ones whims. It is easy to do yet it also follows a precise art. For your garden’s design to be both beautiful and a whole lot easier to maintain, the following basic garden design principles should be followed:

Order

A great DIY garden design has a sense of order and coherence. When thinking along the lines of creating order within your garden you have to think of your garden in terms of its big picture. Do not focus on the parts first. Think of how you want the garden to look like as a whole when the plants have fully grown and they are at the peak of their beauty. It would be helpful if you put into paper what you have in mind for the design in your garden. In that way you can point out what belongs and what does not belong in the garden that created a sense of disorder. Drawing it helps in organizing all your ideas into one coherent and orderly design for your garden.

A factor in maintaining order in your garden is to keep the most of the things in there symmetric and that includes the colors of the plants that are in your garden. Of course you wouldn’t want your garden to be boring. Yet, it would be more beautiful if all the colors in your garden follow some kind of invisible pattern so that there would be a balance in the design. In DIY garden design you wouldn’t want one part of your garden to catch more attention than the rest would you? The garden should be equally beautiful in all places.

Harmony

Sometimes harmony is synonymous with order, yet in terms of garden design these two are separate entities. Harmony plays an important part of your garden to make it look great. Simply put, harmony in the context of gardening means having a theme from which the design of your garden stems from. Everything follows that theme. Themed gardens are very common and a lot of people have created garden with various themes. Among them are gardens with a Japanese theme or an English country garden theme or even a Victorian garden theme.

Along with creating harmony within your garden is sticking to one color palette. While some themes work with a jumble of colors some just do not. Instead of creating a colourful splash, you may end up with a jumble of colored mess that class with one another and therefore ruining the whole design. It would be better if you limit the colors of the flowers in your garden in two to three colors only. In that way, you can appreciate the beauty of each flower and you would not get drowned in the color alone.

Flow

The garden should have a smooth flow of in your garden. There should be a smooth transition between the heights of the various plants in your garden. Shorter plants should not be covered or overshadowed by taller plants or you will not be able to appreciate its beauty at all. There should be a flow in the heights of your plants to make sure that everything is seen and not look haphazardly arranged.
